Visa & Travel

Practical guidance for travelling to Shanghai for your care.

Visa Support

Depending on your nationality and the purpose of your visit, most medical travellers enter China on an M (business/commercial), S2 (short-term private visit) or L (tourist) visa. Visa policies and requirements change from time to time and vary by country, so always confirm the latest rules with your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate.

To support your application, our team can provide:

  • A medical invitation letter confirming your appointment and treatment plan.
  • Supporting medical documentation, such as your consultation summary.
  • Guidance on the documents usually requested, so your application is complete.
We recommend applying for your visa as early as possible — particularly for treatments such as CAR-T, where the overall timeline includes a manufacturing period.

Arriving in Shanghai

Shanghai is served by two main airports: Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). Shanghai SinoUnited Hospital is on Jiangxi Middle Road in Huangpu District, beside the Bund — a central location reachable by taxi, ride-hailing or metro.

  • Airport pickup: our team can arrange a driver to meet you on arrival.
  • Taxis & ride-hailing: widely available; have your destination written in Chinese to show the driver.
  • Metro: an extensive, inexpensive network connects the airports and the city centre.

Getting Around

The hospital's Bund location puts you close to Nanjing Road, the Huangpu River waterfront and many hotels. Your coordinator can help with daily transport between your accommodation and appointments.

Before You Travel

  • Check your passport validity (usually at least six months).
  • Bring prior medical records, imaging and pathology reports.
  • Confirm your insurance coverage and any pre-authorisation.
  • Share your flight details with our team so we can plan your arrival.
